Ruby Trust 2009 "Fortune Seeker," Grand Valley, Colorado
Classic aromas of blackberry fruit, with underlying layers of raspberry and cranberry, leap from the glass in this luscious red from Colorado's Western Slope, made entirely from petit verdot-the least-known of the five "Bordeaux" varietals. The intense, mouth-filling flavors echo the aromas, adding notes of minerals, wildflowers, cola and "forest floor" to the wine's impressions. Soft tannins caress the finish; a finish that lingers, begging the taster for yet another glass. This versatile red wants red-sauced pastas, cranberry-glazed pork chops, or roast rack of lamb to work its magic.
2009 Fortune Seeker; 96 six-packs produced. $25.00/BTL. Sold Out!!
Ruby Trust 2009 "Gun Slinger," Grand Valley, Colorado
Aluscious, complex blend of syrah (75%), cabernet franc (19%)and petit verdot (6%), this inaugural release of the "Gun Slinger" offers up gorgeous aromas of plum and boysenberry fruit with enticing hints of toasted vanilla, minerals, baking spices and violets. The wine is rich and beautifully-balanced on the palate, its structure suggesting that it has years of development ahead. The warm, lush, white pepper-laced finish calls for a roaring fire and roasted beef, elk or venison medallions with raspberrychipotle sauce; barbecued brisket or baby back ribs with garlic mashed potatoes aren't out of the question, either.
2009 Gun Slinger; 225 six-packs produced. $25.00/BTL. Limited quantities still available.
Ruby Trust 2009 "The Smuggler," Grand Valley, Colorado
"The Smuggler" is a blend of cabernet franc (90%), cabernet sauvignon (5%)and petit verdot (5%)that displays ripe, blackberry-black raspberry fruit on the nose, along with traces of buttered toast, licorice, herbs, mocha and tobacco leaf. Those elements are reinforced in the mouth, where the fruit becomes even more prominent, rolling into a long, soft finish that's enhanced by good acid grip and supple, unobtrusive tannins. Though it's tempting to drink now, the wine deserves a few years of bottle age before it's served alongside a well-aged, grilled rib-eye or NewYork strip topped with sauteed shallots and golden Chanterelles.
2009 The Smuggler; 96 six-packs produced. $25.00/BTL. Sold Out!!
Ruby Trust 2009 Bandits Pass," Grand Valley, Colorado
Cabernet and merlot are classic blending partners-the cabernet typically providing length and structure and the merlot adding softness and mid-palate weight-and this cuvee is spot on: The nose holds an alluring assortment of black cherries, dark berry fruits, toasted almonds, coffee, tobacco leaves and licorice. On the palate, this well-structured red offers layers of plump plum and blackberry fruits combined with a mix of savory spices, subtle herbs and firm, dusty tannins. Let the wine slumber for a few years before pouring it in the company of veal ragout.
2009 Bandit's Pass; 170 cases produced. $20.00/BTL. Limited quantities still available.
